Alexander “Alex” Schutz is a wealth advisor for WMS Advisors, LLC. Alex’s academic background in history shaped his long-term perspective on markets and economic cycles, while his graduate studies refined his technical expertise in portfolio construction and investment strategy. Before entering the financial services industry in 2019, he worked as a chocolatier — an experience that instilled a deep appreciation for precision, discipline, and craftsmanship, qualities he brings to our advisory practice today.
He holds a B.S. in History from Salisbury University and a Master’s in Finance, with a concentration in Investments and Securities, from Southern New Hampshire University. He was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, where he and his wife, Eden (“Edie”), now reside there with their two children, Connor and Cassidy. Outside of work, Alex enjoys competitive floor hockey, cooking, home improvement projects, and cheering on the Washington Capitals.
When you are not at the office, you can often be found doing what? If I am not hanging out with my wife and kids, you can find me on the hockey rink playing Dek (Ball) Hockey.
If you could spend the day with anyone, who would it be and what would you want to learn? Being an avid historian, I’d spend the day with Julius Caesar at the height of the Roman Empire. I’d want to understand how he thought about power, strategy, and long-term vision — Understanding how he combined military strategy, political maneuvering, and public persuasion in real time, would be fascinating.
What inspired you to get into your current line of work? I was fortunate to grow up in a household where investing was part of normal conversation. Watching how disciplined use of the markets and thoughtful planning created stability for my family made a real impression on me. I realized not everyone has access to that kind of guidance, and that’s a big part of why I went into this field — to help clients build confidence and long-term security through planning and smart use of the markets.
The best book I have ever read is: While it is not a single book, the Lord of the Ring series.
In another life, I would probably be? Before entering finance, I worked as a chocolatier, and I still have a deep appreciation for the culinary arts. In another life, I would have loved to be a Michelin-star chef or own a restaurant — somewhere excellence, discipline, attention to detail and delicious food truly matter.
